We offer

Production and Screenwriting

The company has produced over 90 hours of prime-time television drama as well as documentaries on subjects ranging from architecture (Johannesburg Style) to social upliftment  (Dance up from the Street) and LGBTI activism (Difficult Love). Much of this has been award-winning, most notably SAFTA Golden Horns for Production, Scriptwriting and Direction on the popular mini-series Riemvasmaak (2008) which dealt with forced removals under apartheid.

Southern Exposure’s documentaries have been shown in festivals all over the world, including Cannes, the Pan African Film Festival and the United Nations Association Film Festival. In 2015, Peter Goldsmid was nominated for Best Documentary Narrative for the Writers Guild of South Africa’s Muse Award, while Difficult Love has won 9 international Awards.

Southern Exposure has between 2015 and 2017 provided scriptwriting services on popular television drama series such as End Game (for SABC), Traffic and Zibondiwe 1,2 and 3 (for ETV) and the Mzansi telenovela Ring of Lies. In 2015, it was responsible for writing A Covert Affair, a 13 x 48-minute drama series for SABC, for which both Peter and Margaret were independently nominated for 2016 Writers Guild of South Africa Muse Awards. In 2020, Peter was nominated for a Muse Award for his animation screenplay, Fesito goes to Market, and won a Muse Best Script Award for another animation screenplay, Natiki, two years later.

Training

We mentor trainees from previously disadvantaged backgrounds on our productions, many of whom go on to successful careers in the film and television industry. In 2017, Southern Exposure was selected by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) of South Africa to devise and develop an Advanced Scriptwriting and Script Editing Course for use at postgraduate level. This course was approved for implementation on 29 May 2018.

Peter Goldsmid has lectured in screen and television writing at AFDA Cape Town, trained multi-camera directors for the SABC and taught documentary filmmaking to Higher Certificate students at the Cape Town campus of SAE (School of Audio Engineering). During Covid he taught Documentary Storytelling online for the NFVF.
