Revolution betrayed sparks creative fury
Daring young artists and musicians protest human rights abuses and corruption in North and South Africa.
Four linked yet stand-alone programs will capture the complexity of change, North and South, in a continent all too often simplistically (and negatively) viewed in Western media. Eah one will feature dynamic, original and driven individuals and their work. People like controversial South African artists, Ayanda Mabula and Anton Kannemeyer, rebellious North African rap stars like Rabah Ourrad & Morrocan Mouad Belghouat, a.k.a."El-Haqed," or "The Enraged" in Moroccan Arabic, provide a unique perspective on freedom, democracy and individual human rights. Theirs is a David against Goliath struggle against corruption or tyranny. There is inherent drama in these uneven contests, while the striking, sometimes shocking performances and art add a strong visual dimension to this exciting, groundbreaking series.
Moroccan commentator, researcher and authority on North African protest music, Loubna Skalli-Hanna, and South Afrian Peter Goldsmid will create a fascinating documentary mini-series that finds surprising communalities between North and South Africa.
